In One Ear, but NOT OUT the Other

Back in school, I remember a teacher conducting a game with the class called ‘Telephone.” The game starts with everyone in a circle and the teacher whispers a story to the first person who then whispers the same story to the next person who them repeats the story to the third and down on the line until the last person says aloud what he just heard. The teacher then tells the original version of what she whispered to the first person and usually the story and details have morphed and twisted into a mixed up narrative.

So it happens daily with news, videos, gossip, rumors and the millions of daily messages that bombard us from our phones, TVs and devices. It is like millions of voices who are yelling at us, pulling us one way and then another.

Stories change, facts get twisted, opinions sneak in, accusations are made, lies are told, and these outrageous yarns continue as the stories get told and retold until the original stories are totally ridiculous. What can be believed? What is the truth? And now with AI (Artificial Intelligence) robots are constructing the noise that is coming at us.

How much of any of it is really accurate or truthful?

Unfortunately, many of us will just accept what we hear the first time without double checking the facts or looking at other sources. And even then, we only absorb the main ideas and don’t always investigate for details before we blurt out these stories to others and giving them our own biases and opinions.

Now we have persons, politicians, organizations and groups who intentionally lie, hide the truth or make up stories to fit their agendas and there are so many of us who just believe whatever is told at face value. It is like a jungle out there with wild animals crying out from all directions...constantly.

Jesus said there will be false shepherds who will attempt to mislead His sheep.
And you’ve heard that sheep are some of the dumbest animals. We are easily influenced and manipulated and will follow each other and whomever will make us jump.

Many of these messages are designed to make us angry, anxious and fearful, and that is the real issue. All the voices coming at us are making us nervous and afraid. Anxiety, unrest and fear is climbing. Fear is what rattles our faith in God.

That is the first clue that what is being told to you may not be the whole story.

What is a Christian to do?

Well there is only one to listen to and that is Jesus. And the one who will decipher the truth is the Holy Spirit.  Fill yourself with the words of Jesus and seek to follow in His ways of love and truth. Ask the Holy Spirit to calm your heart from the noise and bring you His peace which the world cannot shake. And look to Him to reveal the truth in every message, pronouncement and situation so you can respond in the way that Jesus would have you act.

And PRAY.

Give all matters of concern to the Lord and leave everything to Him. He will let you know what is the truth and what is a catcall.

When we are living and breathing the Lord, we will come to understand that when we are barraged with the words of the world, they are only meant to shake, scare and push us away from God. We are being manipulated by the devil to loosen us from the foundation of God through fear, but we can let go of the chatter and keep our eyes on Jesus and look only to Him.

Ask God to reveal the truth among the shouting of the world and He will show you that only His words matter and that if we stay in His light, He will keep His words in our heart.

"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world give do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." - John 14:27
